What do you love most about your work?
"I get to meet so many interesting people. Everyone has a story to share or advice to pass along, and you are never too old to learn something new."
What would you say to young people considering careers in the sector?
"There has never been a better time to start in horticulture. It’s a wonderful career with so many opportunities—find something you enjoy doing and it won't ever feel like work."
What would be your big ask of new Prime Minister Andy Burnham?
"Stop treating businesses as cash cows—it really hurts growth. In a seasonal industry like ours, I see many nurseries that are hesitant to hire because of the burden. Make it easier to employ staff. When I was at school, young people could easily get seasonal work, but that’s almost impossible now."
What are the most important challenges the plant production industry needs to overcome in 2026?
"Rising costs are a massive challenge. Audit your cost rigorously and make sure you're actually turning a profit. Most importantly, staff are invaluable—look after them."
What are you most looking forward to at Four Oaks Trade Show this year?
"There’s always good industry banter, friendly visitors, and the chance to speak directly with suppliers. We operate in a very supportive industry where there is always something new to learn—which is one of the main reasons the BOA exists!"
