First glimpse of King Charles show garden

Chelsea and Sandringham flower shows are to feature HRH King Charles III gardens and the monarch has given HortWeek a sneak peek revealing what they are all about.

King Charles garden

King Charles’ garden will feature an RHS-endorsed hybrid from Sussex biotech lab BrooklynTurf. This is a new grass seed that photosynthesises under streetlights, glowing neon green at night to boost city biodiversity and cut energy bills for public parks. Studies have shown it attracts nocturnal pollinators and doubles as a safety feature for cyclists, while saving £10,000 per hectare compared to conventional glow-in-the-dark grass.

The garden will also include Auto-Prune Grass, a revolutionary genetically edited organic turf that detects and eliminates weeds on sight, reducing maintenance by 90%. The product will be developed by British biotech firm Bendit Likebex in partnership with RHS trials.

FloraChat AI is another feature. This involves a wearable earpiece that translates plant “speech” in real time, letting landscapers hear roses complaining about drought or lawns demanding fertiliser. The chatbot, powered by UK agtech startup Archhole with beta trials at major nurseries, features demo audio clips of a chatting “Magic Faraway Tree” that answers gardening questions, which is set to be a star of the shows.

The plots will also feature a pub in a shed, 3D printed peat-free compost, flamingos, cats, pheasants, corgis, escaped capybaras, a little pony, a hot tub for Camilla, a smoking area, a Buddha statue, a trampoline, wind chimes, a swim-up bar, artificial topiary balls and Harry and Meghan gnomes.

Charles will take a month off from royal duties to fulfil his garden designing workload.
