Durston Compost

As the horticulture industry continues its transition towards peat-free growing media, the compost category is entering one of its most significant periods of change. For retailers and suppliers alike, the challenge is no longer simply replacing peat, but ensuring gardeners continue to achieve reliable, high-quality growing results.

For Somerset-based compost producer Durstons, this shift represents a clear opportunity and one the seventh-generation family business has been preparing for through sustained investment in product development, operational capability and a complete rethink of its product structure.

With more than 150 years of heritage, Durstons has continually evolved to meet changing market demands. The latest chapter marks a deliberate repositioning – moving the brand towards what it describes as ‘Performance Compost’: peat-free growing media designed to outperform both traditional peat mixes and earlier peat alternatives.

Peat-free: the direction of travel
Despite continued debate around the precise timing of legislation, peat-free growing media remains the clear direction of travel for the horticulture industry. Retailers are increasingly reviewing their compost ranges to ensure they are prepared for the transition while maintaining strong consumer confidence in the category.

Durstons believes that success in the evolving growing media market will ultimately be defined by performance, ensuring gardeners achieve consistent results regardless of the raw materials used within the mix.

Creating structure within the compost category
Central to Durstons’ strategy is a newly structured range architecture designed to bring greater clarity to the compost fixture.

The Durstons portfolio is now organised into three tiers – Everyday, Traditional and Advanced – allowing retailers to cater to a wide spectrum of gardeners while maintaining a clear, logical product ladder.

Everyday composts are designed for value-conscious, high-volume growing, while the Traditional range retains familiar blends for long-standing customers. Yet, the strategic focus sits firmly on the Advanced range, which represents Durstons’ flagship peat-free offer.

Advanced growing media takes centre stage
Developed through extensive research and formulation work, the Advanced collection has been engineered to deliver professional-grade performance for home gardeners.

Independent growing trials demonstrated that products within the range can deliver up to 70% bigger plants than comparable professional peat-reduced products, while also increasing bloom production.

According to sales director Dan Durston, this performance is key to building confidence in peat-free growing media. “The peat-free transition has created uncertainty for many gardeners, particularly where earlier products didn’t always deliver the results people expected,” he says. “Our focus has been on developing composts that remove that doubt. The Advanced range has been engineered to provide consistent, high-performing results so retailers can recommend peat-free products with real confidence.”

Innovation delivering measurable results
The performance of the Advanced range is driven by two proprietary ingredients developed by Durstons.

  • Gro Fibre, a thermodynamically processed pine wood fibre, improves aeration, water retention and structure while maintaining consistency across batches.
  • Gro Boost, a renewable organic ingredient produced at the company’s Somerset facility, provides nutrients and beneficial microbes to support strong root development and healthy plant growth.

Together, these innovations help deliver a peat-free compost that supports strong root systems, balanced moisture availability and reliable plant performance.

Expanding into indoor gardening
The Advanced portfolio now spans 13 specialist growing media products, covering everything from seed composts and John Innes formulations to mixes for tubs, baskets, roses and shrubs.

Among the newest additions is Advanced Houseplant Compost, reflecting the continued growth of indoor gardening. The product provides a balanced nutrient profile alongside enhanced moisture retention, helping indoor plants develop strong roots and vibrant foliage while reducing the need for frequent watering.

With a refreshed brand identity, investment in innovation and a performance-led product strategy, Durstons is positioning itself not simply as a heritage compost producer, but as a key player in shaping the next generation of growing media.
