Glasshouse for sale

Half acre of aluminium glass in Epping, Essex is for sale to anyone who can dismantle and remove it.

Carlton

Owner Richard Hotchkin wants to dispose of the glasshouses.

He said: "After a successful career in horticulture, my Dad ended up as a partner in a garden centre and originally used the site at Carlton Nursery to grow bedding plants as stock for the garden centre.

"In the hurricane of 1987 the original glass was damaged beyond repair and following an insurance bun fight, the current block of glass was bought from new, and erected on the site of the original glass. Dad continued to grow stock for the garden centre until he and his business partner decided to retire.

"At that point dad took full ownership of the Carlton Nursery site while his former partner took ownership of the garden centre site. Following his retirement, Dad rented out the glass initially to a guy who grew herbs for boutique and health food shops for a number of years.

"Subsequently it was taken over by some growers of architectural plants for offices and shops all over London and the South of England.

"Following Dad's death 10 years ago and the departure of the architectural plants team, the glass has mainly been used by mum and the family for storage, but it is now empty.

"Mum's at the point now where despite the memories she has of helping dad in the glass house, she no longer wants the worry of having to think about whether or not to try and find tenants and would prefer to have someone take it all away and get some use out of it."
