Why technical advice is the key to unlocking product value

Ste Massam, national products manager at Fargro, on how technical support helps growers turn product choices into better crop performance

Growers today have more product options than ever. But more choice doesn’t always lead to better outcomes. The real challenge isn’t access to inputs – it’s knowing which ones to use, how to apply them effectively and when to make adjustments. That’s where technical advice becomes essential.

At Fargro, we’ve seen this shift across all sectors. Whether you’re growing soft fruit, herbs, or ornamentals, the most successful growers are those working closely with technical specialists to maximise input effectiveness. It’s no longer just about purchasing products; it’s about investing in expertise.

It’s the product and the plan

Earlier this year, I visited a commercial grower struggling with root development after switching to a peat-free substrate – a common challenge without a one-size-fits-all solution. Instead of recommending a product immediately, we assessed the broader context, including water movement through the substrate, nutrient behaviour and microbial activity in the root zone.

Based on this, we developed a tailored programme focusing on enhancing soil biology and nutrient availability. Within weeks, the grower observed noticeable improvements in plant vigour and overall crop health. More importantly, they understood why it was working and how to maintain those results confidently moving forward.

That’s the value of technical advice: it’s not a line item on an invoice – it’s a long-term investment in informed decision-making.

Enhancing IPM with expert guidance

The same principle applies to Integrated Pest Management (IPM). As the industry moves away from traditional chemical controls, biological solutions are the future – but only if used correctly.

Our technical team adds real value here. From selecting the right beneficial organisms to determining compatible tank mixes and assisting growers in monitoring environmental conditions, we ensure biologicals are not just used but used effectively.

We’ve supported growers with customised IPM plans that deliver tangible results. It’s not about throwing everything at a problem – it’s about understanding the system and building sustainable solutions.

Supporting the entire supply chain

Our technical expertise benefits both our direct grower customers and the broader network of businesses that supply our products. We collaborate closely with these partners, providing them with access to the same insights, resources and support.

Through training, product guidance and ongoing support, we aim to foster strong, enduring relationships that extend beyond transactions. When everyone in the supply chain is confident in what they provide, growers achieve the best results, which benefits us all.

A smarter approach to growing

Our holistic growing approach integrates all these elements, helping growers look beyond inputs to consider the bigger picture: soil health, crop resilience and overall system performance.

It’s grounded in practical experience, not theory. And it works because we take the time to understand each grower’s unique needs, not just what’s available in stock.

Products are important and always will be. But in today’s world, they’re not enough on their own. The growers achieving the best results are those who ask questions, seek advice and make decisions based on real insight.

At Fargro, we’re here to support that, not just as a supplier, but as a reliable technical partner.
