Steve Carter will be taking part in a Hortec panel discussion on Future Proofing Nursery Production at Four Oaks Trade Show, Lower Withington, Cheshire, which will take place at 11.15am September 3.

How did you get into the industry?

I started at an early age (11) growing plants and selling them in the local market. I decided to follow a career in Horticulture and went to Reading University to study for a degree in Horticulture.

What do you do in your day-to-day job?

General manager of Fleurie nursery and director of the Farplants group of companies. My day is extremely varied from supporting members of the team; managing the finances; dealing with items which others aren’t experienced in; with far too many meetings!

What is the biggest issue facing the industry?

Rising costs, many of which are outside of the industries control (energy, labour, importation, raw materials, EPR and other government taxations).

What are your plans for the future?

Look at machinery or different ways to work (simple solutions) to reduce labour costs. Also considering which machines are better able to handle the more abrasive growing media which growing peat-free brings.

Tell us about Farplants at Four Oaks 2026.

Fresh off the back of a busy National Plant Show where we previewed our latest introductions and expanding portfolio, Farplants Sales Ltd is returning to Four Oaks Trade Show this September!

This year, we’re particularly excited to share The Green Room—our brand-new range of premium indoor plants curated to create standout, high-margin retail displays. Whether you're looking to refresh your houseplant area or discover our newest outdoor introductions, our team will be on hand to walk you through the range, discuss tailored support, and help you plan your upcoming seasonal ordering.

Steve Carter is a director of Farplants.
