How did you get into the industry?

I’ve always been passionate about plants, gardening and horticulture and was lucky enough to land a role as Head of Quality and Innovation at Bord na Mona. Growing up on a dairy farm, I had a good understanding of the importance of soil and it felt like a great fit. Almost 15 years on and I’m helping other businesses via my consultancy which is incredibly rewarding.

What do you do in your day-to-day job?

Which hat do I put on today is a phrase I use a lot! Core activities cover advice to manufactures and growers, Chairman responsibilities for the Growing Media Association, advocacy work on peat and peat-free, Director activities for the Responsible Sourcing Scheme and trying to sell retail growing media (Wonderfuel) to support charity work for the industry and local communities. Oh and I also specialise in Toy Safety and consumer product legal requirements.

What is the biggest issue facing the industry?

Lack of support and interest in the overall requirements of the horticultural industry to ensure it is futureproof. UK Government and Policy is not supporting British growers/manufacturers nor providing the required funding for innovation and transitions to more sustainable practices.

What are your plans for the future?

Hopefully continue supporting the industry and sharing my knowledge. For me, the number one goal is ensuring all consumers have the tools and expertise to grow plants and get the ‘bug’ for horticulture. We must ensure all our products and services support consumers to reduce the ‘self-blame’ or ‘I kill everything’ narrative – this will stimulate growth. I’m passionate about the consumer facing Minimum Quality Standard which will drive positive change for growing media users. Ultimately (whichever part of horticulture you are involved in) we require the general public to achieve success.

Simon will be taking part in the 'What's the Next Step for Peat-Free' panel discussion at Four Oaks Trade Show, which will take place at 12.30pm September 3.

Join our panel of industry experts: Matthew Appleby HortWeek (chair), with Dan Durston of Durstons, Simon Blackhurst, chair of the Growing Media Association and Peter Burks, CEO of the Garden Centre Association.
