Huge peatland restoration framework launched for Wales

Work under the eight-year contract is worth up to £24m.

The Peatlands Restoration Framework 2025 published by Natural Resources Wales requires contractors to carry out "the skilful manipulation of peat and other wetland soil types with tracked excavators". 

Contractors must employ a range of restoration techniques including raising and stabilising water levels, re-vegetating of bare peat, stopping peat erosion and cutting of dominant vegetation on Welsh Peatlands.

The works will be carried out in un-forested and afforested upland blanket bog and lowland bog and fen environments.

The tender is split into three Lots:

Lot 1. Groundworks - £16,800,000

  • Lot 1A - North Wales Groundworks - F1=5, F2=10, F3=15
  • Lot 1B - Mid Wales Groundworks - F1=5, F2=10, F3=15
  • Lot 1C - South Wales Groundworks - F1=5, F2=10, F3=15

Lot 2. Vegetation / Scrub Management - £4,799,998

  • Lot 2A - North Wales Scrub - F1=5, F2=10, F3=15
  • Lot 2B - Mid Wales Scrub - F1=5, F2=10, F3=15
  • Lot 2C - South Wales Scrub - F1=5, F2=10, F3=15

Lot 3. Peatland Development - £2,400,000 

  • Lot 3 - All Wales Peatland Development - F1=2, F2=3, F3=3

The prospective end date for this open framework is 29 October 2033

The deadline for receipt of expressions of interest is 3 September 2025.
