There is undoubtedly a perception that horticulture salaries are on the lower side, a factor that contributes to difficulties in recruitment across all sectors.
But the real picture seems more complex.
In the last few months HortWeek has reported on a recommended 5% increase in salaries of golf club staff, Tradefix Direct said landscaping pays better than roofing or plastering, arborists are getting less than the national average but a MorePeople survey found horticulture salaries overall fared better than national average.
Meanwhile, HortWeek's own annual salary survey of advertised jobs found average pay rates tracked close to the national average.
But is there a "grass ceiling" for working in horticulture? Does working in and with nature offer a well-being bonus or is it an excuse to depress wages, and are late-life career changers distorting the jobs market?
