He said his students at the London College of Garden Design are his "greatest inspiration" when they "get" how to design gardens. "Many have gone onto rewarding careers."

Fisher Tomlin added: "Planting is a major part of the solution to a changing climate. I hope the book addresses more creative solutions."

The publishers say this is the "first book to reveal how to achieve professional-level design while blending sustainability and beauty in gardens of every scale.

"In a time of renewed interest in the role of plants in our lives, garden designers are increasingly turning to modern planting design techniques to introduce biodiversity and resiliency into our landscapes and to enhance human well-being by creating spaces that emphasise connection, innovation, and complexity.

"This is the first book to give context to the main techniques used in contemporary garden design today, and reveals how to achieve professional-level solutions in gardens of large and small by exploring and explaining a variety of tips and tools and providing a guiding framework to support the development of any style garden in a step-by-step format. Hundreds of images and case studies by some of today’s best international planting designers bring the opportunities to life on the page."

The book is published by Rizzoli at £35. The first print run sold out pre-publication. Fisher Tomlin is set to be a HortWeek podcast guest.

Among guests at the launch at Brown's in London were Jo Thompson, Paul Hervey-Brookes, Kate Gould, Will Williams, Jonathan Ward, Jeremy Storey-Walker, Andrew Bannister, David Richardson, Sarah Wilson, Anita Bates and many more.
